After working on my mentorship for almost a year, I finally finished the first 10 weeks of the Advanced Digital Painting mentorship. The first advanced class starts on Sept. 4th. I actually still have two slots available if anyone is interested. You can find out more information about the class here. enliighten.com/daarkens-mentor…

If you are interested in taking the advanced class that starts on Sept. 4th, send an email to mentorship@daarken.com.

I also have the "video only" tier available for the Advanced Digital Painting class. It includes all of the videos from the first 10 weeks of the class (25 videos totaling more than 1,500 minutes) and is $250. You can purchase it by sending the payment to my Paypal account (daarkenart@daarken.com) and then create a free Vimeo account. Send a message to me via Vimeo (my user is Daarken) and I will give you access to the videos.

Thanks!

In the early years of his youth, Daarken attended the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Most of his days were spent huddled over a sketchbook at a figure drawing workshop or in a cafe, where he was affectionately known as “the guy that likes to draw deltoids.” After three long years of drawing deltoids and video game playing, Daarken graduated Cum Laude with a BFA in traditional illustration. Daarken began his career in 2004 when his incessant video game playing was interrupted by a phone call. The mysterious voice on the other end identified himself as someone from Wizards of the Coast. Daarken immediately blurted out that he would like to work for them. His overzealous nature was countered with the statement “but you haven’t even heard what the project is yet.” And so began the lifestyle of creating monsters and zombies, with the occasional video game playing on the side. Daarken’s true video game playing powers were put to the test when he was hired by Mythic Entertainment in 2007 as a concept artist for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. His two loves combined into a gigantic ball of awesomeness, which he happily rolls around all day. He now spends his days creating Warhammer monsters and zombies and, of course, playing more video games.

Hello Daarken! A few years ago I saw digital art, the first job that I saw - yours. For several years I watched different speed paintings and wanted to learn how to create their piece of art. 2 years ago I bought my first graphics tablet, painted several clumsy drawings and thought that it was not mine. But five months ago, I started to paint again, this time seriously and actively. Could you, please, look at my pictures and tell me what needs to be done to get closer to your level? When drawing my bad turns determine the proportions in perspective, I do it intuitively, but I want to achieve accuracy. I also feel that I can not accurately depict light and shadow. How all this be achieved? A month ago, 21 years old, not too late to do it in order to achieve professional results?

Honestly, it is just going to take a lot of time and practice. You say you've only been painting seriously for the past 5 months, it took me 15 years to get to where I am today. You won't reach a professional level in a year or two years, or probably not even in 5 years. It takes time.

My suggestion is to do more paintings from life. Paint still lives, figures, go draw at a cafe or at a park. Draw anything and everything. Age doesn't matter in this industry, so don't worry about that.

Thank you daarken. You're in the arts, as Ronaldo in football :)
Forgot to ask. Not studied at the Art Academy, does it matter?

Haha, I dunno about that, but thanks!

School doesn't usually matter. I probably know more famous artists that didn't go to school than ones that did. School is really up to the individual person. Some people need that structure because they lack the determination and discipline to do it themselves.

Hey man, Absolutely love your work and follow you on Youtube too, You are one of the best artists at painting armour, I would love to be able to draw and paint armour. Could you recommend anything to me as I am not sure where to start. Do you just keep drawing armour from reference until you come up with something?
Thanks so much in advance , keep up the great work.

Thanks! Yeah, I would suggest doing a lot of studies from photos to build up your mental library. If you do it enough, you'll start to remember how to do it when you want to paint from your imagination.

Hi Daarken!
I just wanted to let you know that I purchased your artbook for my birthday and that our experiences (though I am way less experienced LOL) are almost parallel. I think that if we met, we'd sorta be bros. Hahahaha great artbook, man! Thank you for sharing your stories with us who bought Elysium. Keep up the great work!

I noticed that you do a lot of gory, infected creatures.
Is that a preference or is it something else?

I tend to enjoy painting evil characters and creatures, but also my clients always hire me for that type of thing since I've done it before.

I'm not going to pretend to be as good as you, but I think I might feel the same way. Evil characters can have many different looks and give off many different feels.
Sometimes, I might feel like drawing a cruel, bloodthirsty, almost primal creature, and other times, I will draw a cold, calculating mastermind, carefully planning his every move.
Anyway, I love your work, keep at it!
